This adaptive reuse project transformed existing warehouse and office buildings into a K-12 charter school supporting an inquiry-based curriculum. Connections between buildings create a cohesive campus atmosphere and bring together new classrooms, cafeteria, gymnasium, black box theater, music room and science labs.

Just 5 years after opening, Meridian School was serving a population of over 1,000 students, with nearly 1,400 more on a waiting list. The conversion of an existing warehouse into new learning space helped the school to expand offerings and support their vision of nurturing lifelong learners, allowing more than 1,400 K-12 students to develop skills for inquiry and research.

An accelerated design and construction schedule ensured the new space would be occupied by the following school year. The design reutilized the existing mezzanine, which required our team to design MEP systems around existing structural and architectural components. New roof mounted HVAC equipment was placed so that existing roof penetrations from previous equipment could be reutilized.

The fifth phase of the project required our team to integrate new building controls with those of the first four phases. We worked with the architect to understand the campus and existing conditions in order to seamlessly connect with our new MEP design.
